Giving paintings for presents is awesome as it’s cheap. Yes, that sounds horrible, but I’ve just had a year of 21sts, all of which I felt bad for not rocking up with a gift. I wish I had been a bit proactive and made some presents in advance as a few things I gave (cheapo champagne, for example) weren’t particularly personal. A painting is the opposite extreme, incredibly personal and stand-out individual.

It’s also something that the person might keep forever, which is always nice.

Although it does seem a bit big headed sometimes…

This one was for my friend Clara, who likes skulls.

It seems a bit morbid that on her birthday I made her a picture that looks like the spirit of death, but she seemed to like it.

I really enjoy painting in this style (messy and all over the place) but I can’t ever seem to get it right without using my fingers to smudge everything. I’d love to figure out how to recreate this style purposefully rather than through trial and error, but at the moment it only seems to look this alive when I just jump in.

This is the first.

Starting a new blog/ microblog makes me nervous after the last one fell apart at the 100 post mark.

The picture is a poppy, which symbolises eternal sleep, oblivion, and imagination. Eternal sleep is the old blog (*tear*), oblivion is where the ideas come from, and imagination is what I need this blog for. To stir it and force it to empty all of the ideas so that new ones can wander in.

(p.s. if you’re interested in seeing any of my old blather, the blog is Some of it is good blather.)
